BIM model audit

To promote investment in the application of BIM methodologies, it is essential to guarantee the advantages of using models during project development, such as economic and time savings in project management.

Therefore, increasingly, audit processes are required that allow the different agents to ensure the BIM potential of the models in the transfer of information between the different phases.

Why perform a BIM audit?

The life cycle of a BIM model is very broad, ranging from the design phase of the project to the maintenance and operations phase, and, finally, its dismantling or demolition.

Therefore, it is important to ensure the quality of the information that will be transferred, expanded or modified, within our BIM models during all these phases.

It must be taken into account that in addition to complying with municipal regulations or project requirements, the information must adapt to the standards and specifications defined in the BIM collaboration document between the agents - the BIM Execution Plan or BEP-.

From all of this derives the importance of always keeping project information updated and reviewed by applying different types of periodic audits:

Types of audit

The most important aspect of a good Audit Plan is that it is adapted to the requirements of each project and that it ensures the consistency of the analysis during the development of the entire project.

Carrying out audits allows the information manager to obtain a global vision of the current state and viability of the model. To do this, it must be supported by visualization tools that allow for the analysis and control of the information. Below are several of these tools developed as dashboards by ATBIM, depending on the type of audit:

Dashboard of _Audit for compliance with standards in BIM models

Dashboard of Quality control audit and measurements of elements contained in BIM models.

Dashboard of Coordination audit and interference review on collision tests carried out between different models.

Who performs the audits?

Audit processes must be carried out periodically and in parallel with the development of the model. This process of monitoring internal quality control usually falls on the BIM Coordinator of each team. It is also true that the development of the necessary tools, or general audits in the transfer of information between different phases of the project, tend to be complex tasks that often require the support of an external team experienced in these tasks.

At ATBIM, as “Managers in the digitalization of information and processes, in the development and application of BIM methodology” certified by the ISO 19650 Standard, we have specialized in the development of visualization tools that allow us to carry out these audits in a fast, efficient and adjusted way to the needs of each project.
